Supporting Autistic Students in Inclusive Classrooms (K-12)

Paula Kluth, Ph.D., the author of You’re Going to Love this Kid! (2nd Edition), tells a story in her book about the morning of her first day of school. Feeling overwhelmed at being placed as the teacher of a “challenging” student with ASD, the principal eased her concerns by telling her emphatically that she is “going to love this kid!” That first year of teaching sent her down a career path of studying how to best meet autistic learners’ needs in an inclusive classroom. Her book, a result of this work, is now in its second edition.

You’re Going to Love this Kid! (2nd edition) takes a comprehensive look at the practical, theoretical, and even legal challenges of teaching autistic students in an inclusive classroom. From preparing your classroom to building relationships to implementing an inclusive pedagogy, Paula Kluth gives teachers direct support for working with students with ASD. The book includes activities, checklists and lesson plans to help teachers create an effective inclusive environment.

Through reading and research, educators taking this course will explore creating inclusive classrooms that support autistic students’ needs. Educators will also investigate special topics and integrate new knowledge into their teaching environment.

This course is equivalent to 3 semester hours or 4.5 quarter hours. It is a graduate-level course intended for K-12 educators who have completed a bachelor’s degree. It is recommended that you receive board or district approval before registering with TPAI.
