Course Overview
Dr. Gholdy Muhammad’s framework starts with an unexpected source — 19th-century Black literary societies. Through her research, she identified key elements of literacy instruction that worked then but are missing from today’s classrooms. By systematically comparing historical and modern approaches, she built a framework that links proven practices to contemporary instruction, with a specific focus on the needs of youth of color.
Her Historically Responsive Literacy framework is built on four academic pursuits: Identity Development, Skill Development, Intellectual Development, and Criticality. You’ll learn how all four work together to create the conditions for students to engage with literature at a higher level — and how to implement the framework within your existing literacy program.
About the Author
This is a graduate-level course intended for K–12 educators who have completed a bachelor’s degree. It is recommended that you receive board or district approval before registering with TPAI.
